We are almost there, 7 Days until Christmas Eve. You can do this! I think we need to remind ourselves as Mamas that we need to take some time for ourselves, especially during the holidays. We put so much pressure on ourselves to make sure everything is perfect for Christmas morning. Because guess what? You have too, how else will it all get done? Each year I tell myself, I am going to start shopping earlier, don't wait until last minute. Jokes on me, I'm always a last-minute shopper. Don't even get me started on wrapping the presents. I am constantly double checking my list to make sure I got everything on everyone else's wish list. Did you get all the teacher gifts? Did we get a host gift? How much am I spending? We have all been here. We are here.
What I have been trying to do is just, stop. Breathe. Be present. I remind myself that one day, the children will be grown. The house will be quiet. Stop putting so much pressure to do it all. Today I sat down with my oldest, and he asked "Are we going to take the littles to go see Santa. What about gingerbread houses?" It made me so happy that he still wanted to do all that stuff. It wasn't just "stuff" to him, and he was still just as excited as the years before. So, maybe we do have to do it all. How do you say no to that?
Here is your Christmas inspiration to doing it "all". Tonight, at dinner, we talked with the kids about what they liked most at Christmas time. What did they want to do? What traditions meant the most to them? Set some boundaries for yourself by making a list. Start with the Top 3 things you want to do with your children, Top 3 three things your children want to do/see, and then 3 things we can put on a bucket list. Remember, the children are off for Christmas break and some of these traditions can be done after Christmas too!
Most importantly, especially during the holidays, do not forget self-care as a mom. You matter too. Take that nap. Go for a walk around the block. My favorite thing to do after the kids go to bed, is to sit with only the lights of the Christmas tree on. Spending a few minutes in silence. Pour that glass of wine or shot of whiskey! One thing I have really enjoyed and has help me to stop and focus on my life is keeping a gratitude journal. Some days I grateful for my hot cup of coffee, and other days I'm grateful for the noise and chaos in the house.
Deep breaths, you got this!
